There is a brokenness
out of which comes the unbroken,
a shatteredness
out of which blooms the unshatterable.
There is a sorrow
beyond all grief which leads to joy
and a fragility
out of whose depths emerges strength.
Do you need time-out to reflect on wounds to your soul'? Would you like help bringing meaning, coherence and a greater sense of purpose & well-being to your life?
If the answer to either of those questions is 'yes', then a soulful approach may help. Welcome.
I bring an integrative, relational and soulful approach to counselling. I hold a Diploma in Integrative Transpersonal Counselling from ReVision and I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which oversee professional standards and ethics. As well as working in private-practice, I also work as a volunteer counsellor at Treetops Hospice for bereaved clients or those facing a life-limiting illness.
What can I expect from an integrative and transpersonal approach?
An integrative and transpersonal approach unites the spiritual aspects of human experience with traditional psychological approaches, as well as the individual with the collective. It can be characterised by the following features:
An Embodied and Holistic Approach: Transpersonal counselling/psychotherapy considers the whole person, including their mind, body, emotions, and soul. It recognizes that mental health is interconnected with spiritual well-being and seeks to address both. The counselling space is welcoming and client-focused.
A Soulful Approach: Space is allowed for exploring the soul's journey, including any spiritual beliefs, practices, and experiences. It may incorporate mindfulness and other practices as tools for healing and personal growth.
Non-ordinary States of Consciousness: Transpersonal therapy acknowledges and respects the therapeutic potential of expanded states of consciousness, which can be accessed through practices like meditation, breathwork, and sometimes even psychedelics (where a lawful setting is accessible).
Wisdom: A key aspect of transpersonal therapy is to help individuals respect their ego or personal identity and its important function whilst also connecting with a larger sense of Self or the universe. This can lead to experiences of unity, interconnectedness and a sense of purpose.
Self-acceptance, Healing and Integration: Transpersonal therapy also includes working with 'subpersonalities', much like Internal Family Systems Therapy, where individual 'parts' and their burdens are worked with in order to achieve greater coherence and flourishing . Transpersonal therapy seeks to help individuals heal from past traumas, resolve inner-conflicts, and integrate all parts of their being into a cohesive, harmonious whole.
Creative Expression: Creative activities such as art, music, and movement can be used in transpersonal therapy to facilitate self-expression and exploration of the unconscious mind.
Personal Growth: The focus is not only on alleviating symptoms at a deep level but also on promoting personal and spiritual growth, helping individuals realise their full potential. Transpersonal therapy has a distinctive non-pathological stance, and regards what others may seek to label as solutions to particular issues in the past that may no longer serve.
What topics does Edward cover?
Although I can hold space for a wide range of issues brought to therapy, I specialise in the following areas:
A typical counselling session is 50 minutes, charged at £60 paid in advance. I can work face-to-face where possible, but I also offer ‘walk-n-talk’ sessions’ at Attenborough Nature Reserve, Nottingham and I can meet online.
I offer both short-term work (6-12 sessions), which can integrate elements of life-coaching and be oriented to a particular issue. More impactful work can be achieved by a longer-term commitment, as feelings of safety develop with the relationship over time, enabling a deepening in the sharing and understanding of experience.
Please contact me to book an initial 20-minute session (free), to find out if we are a good fit for working together.
Testimonials - What have people said about Edward's approach?
Carol
Edward was very understanding, patient and calm. He really listened to me. Nothing was too much trouble. He has given me the courage and confidence, I needed to get through each day.
He’s helped me get my life back on track, albeit a different track. He helped me through my journey of grief. I was feeling broken and didn’t know how to fix myself. I was able to share my deepest and darkest moments, of despair with him. The darkness is now starting to lift.
Shelley
Edward made me feel very at ease, he also helped me see things differently... I appreciate him very much as he made every session worthwhile. Before I met Edward I had counselling and gave up on it as I felt it was pointless. Edward changed my perspective after the first session, he is very understanding and very easy to talk to. He didn’t give up on me even on the days I gave up on myself.
